Just south of downtown San Antonio, a thriving arts community has put down roots with a network of studios and galleries where art in many forms is being created and showcased.
Every First Friday and Second Saturday of the month, many of these studios and galleries open their doors to art enthusiasts for free art walks that bring Southtown to life. Along with art exhibitions to peruse, local artisans offer an array of handmade goods, food vendors serve up delectable dishes and attendees are sometimes treated to live music.
All signs point South for local art, flavors and fun. Just past the hustle and bustle of downtown, you’ll find Southtown the Arts District. Southtown encompasses a large creative community and is unique with a mix of artists, locally-owned bars, coffee shops, boutiques, museums and art galleries.
In recent years, it’s been hard to keep track of the names attached to different parts of Southtown.
The most firmly established is the King William Cultural Arts District. But the area around the intersection of South Flores Street and Lone Star Boulevard that attracts crowds with a monthly Second Saturday art crawl has been been struggling with a split identity for about a decade. It is alternately referred to as the South Flores (SoFlo) Arts District and the Lone Star Art District.
